I have a 1992 chevy silverado with 255,000 miles on it. The belt is noisy. I have replaced all suspect pulleys and belt. If put dust a small amount of baby powder on it is quiet for15 to 20 miles. Some one suggested the pullies are highly polished and need to be scuffed. Anyone else had this problem and solved. Thanks Joe
I replaced the tensioner about 2 years ago, it could be bad got it at napa, the idlers are new the only orginial pulley is the power steering pulley all the others came with engine i rebuilt and had less than 100,000 miles. I think i will replace tensioner and see if that does the trick. Thanks Joe
slowly starts making noise, barely noticable at first then keeps getting louder. I have cleaned every thing several times. I have replaced all idler pulleys, tensioner, newer alternator, cleaned all grooved pulleys, they all match, the fan cluch seems ok. When it starts making noise i put a very small amount of baby powder on the power steering pulley, because that is handy as i keep my baby powder beside the radiator, before start up and it is quiet for 20-30 miles. I have put 2 new belts on, not a waste as i always have had a spare, so i am out of ideas. My real mechanic friend says to turn up the radio.
I have been driving this old truck for a long time not worth getting full coverage, insurance cost more than worth, and i intend to keep driving it until the wheels fall off. Usually can fix any thing without much expense so i wil just keep trying to fix. When i bought the new tensioner it came with the idler pulley and it was a little bigger than the one i had installed when replaced engine. I just put on a new belt in the last month, i do not remember brand , at a cost of $41. Thanks again for all the help. Joe
I went thru a deal similar to this a few years ago on a.....don't remember what.... it turned out to be the friggin' water pump. With the belt off, the pump shaft had quite a bit of slop. Sometimes it made a God-awful squawking noise and sometimes it didn't. Replaced the pump and no more noise.
Love is grand- divorce is 180 grand. Water pump is new when replaced engine. Some one suggested that a pulley might be highly polished. What if spray a salt water solution on my suspect pulley, the power steering unit - let is dry overnite- put belt back and take off. Anyone use rusty pulleys on an rr??
