440 won't rev up

Postby Rlc65714 on Fri Jul 20, 2012 9:58 pm

Hey guys Ive got an old pickup I'm trying to get on the road and can't seem to get it to rev up, heres what I've got:
77 dodge 4x4 pickup
-1973 440 out of a motorhome with 75k miles on it.
-Rebuilt Orielys distributor, electronic ignition, alternator & regulator, plugs, wires, coil, cap, and rotor.
-The motor has an edelbrock performer intake on it and headers but basically stock beyond that.
-I've got a 750 manual choke Edelbrock carb on it with a K&N filter and filter lid. The carb was rebuilt 2 weeks ago.
My problem is it starts right up and runs fine until you hit approx. 2,000rpm and the acts like its hitting a rev limiter both in gear and in park. I have no idea whats wrong with it and have heard several different opinions on whats wrong so I figured I'd see what some of you hardcore guys think. I've noticed that the carb makes a really loud sucking noise while idling, I figured it would make some noise but its loud enough it can be heard from 30' away with the hood shut and open headers, not sure if thats an edelbrock thing or what. I've had several people tell me to take that carb off and put a Holley on it but I dont want to fork out $300 for something that I dont know will fix it. I've also been told that it might have bent pushrods or bad valve seats but I figured it would backfire or at least run rough at idle if it had something like that going on. Anyways any input would be appreciated, I'm just at my wits end and am about to just take it to someone and tell them to send me the bill. I hope I gave enough details to the situation. Again thanks guys :layrubber:

There is nothing wrong with an AFB !!!!

It is a better streetable carb than any Holley.

You could have any number of items bad, ignition coil, valve springs, fuel filter etc.

I put a new coil and fuel filter on it and neither one seemed to help, Im going to run a compression test on it today and pull the valve covers to see if any valve springs are broken or anything. This motor was running fine 2 years ago when it was in another pickup and then sat on a motor stand for a year until I put it in this pickup, Ive been so busy with work I haven't gotten it running until just recently. Can valve springs go bad with just sitting for a year? I'm not an engine builder or anything and have never really messed with that stuff

Ive taken carb cleaner and sprayed around the carb base and where the intake meets the heads and it doesnt do anything. The tank was emptied out and fresh gas put in it, its got a clear filter about 3" from the carb and it still looks brand new. I'm going to try and get somebody to look at it this week and see what they think about it, I'm just so tired of messing with it

A buddy came out last night and screwed the drivers side metering screw on the front of the carb all that way in and it didnt do anything, he said that meant the carb has an internal issue and I'd be better off to just replace the carb. He then screwed the left one in and it started to sputter out so he said the the drivers side metering screw isnt doing anything at all, I'm not a carb guy and have never heard of this. Any opinions?

It might be but I ran a compression test tonight and all cylinders are about 100psi except #4 is 75 and #6 is barely 30 so looks like I need to figure out if its a bad head or piston or something.

I pulled the valve cover off and watched the valves move up and down just like all of the other cylinders. I'm going to go ahead and pull them off and rebuild them or get a new pair. Do you have any running 440's or a set of 452 or 906 heads right now MSIMS? Yeah I figured the carb still needs looked at but the low compression issue is def #1 priority right now

How much for the running 76 440? I think I want to stick to the RB platform since ive got an intake and headers for one now. I might come out and look around for some parts if I cant use the parts i have now
