car hauler (trailer) question

Postby axe1993 on Sun Jan 20, 2013 12:13 am

I'm in the process of building a homemade car trailer. My boss gave me some free steel from a crate one of our new machines came in. I also picked up a 27ft travel trailer frame cheap. My plans are to use the 2"x6" tube frame that's 1/8" wall from the travel as the frame. Then I was going to use the 3"x5" tubing that's also 1/8" wall that I got from my boss every 2ft as cross braces. Then he also gave me some 5" channel that's 3/16" thick that I'm using for the tongue. I'm building this just like a factory build where my tongue starts in front of front axle and come all the way up to front almost then bends and sticks out from under bed giving approximately 36"-42" tongue. Im concerned about the walk thickness of the tubing I'm using. With the size of my braces and as many as I'm using will it be plenty sturdy enough? When done it will be 19-20ft with a 3ft dove tail. Reason for long dove tail is so I can get my 01 z28 on to it. I would like to be able to haul full size trucks and suv also if needed. I'm using 3,500lb axles also. What do you guys think, will this work or should I sell steel for scrap and keep driving my car to and from the track? I just can't afford a decent trailer so this is my only hope. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yea Mike I agree I kinda wished I kept that trailer and just redone it and lowered the deck highroad on it. I just thought why cut apart a good trailer if someone else can use it like it is. You should have waved cash in my face and made offer like the other Guy did.
