LS Heads

Postby nelson on Fri Oct 11, 2013 12:15 pm

I am building a 5.3 and was wondering if there is a certain casting of factory heads that's better than others? Will 6.0 heads work on the 5.3 with the smaller bore. Thinking about a single turbo setup but wanted a good flowing head. My engine and trans is out of a 2000-2001 Chevy truck. Thanks Jarratt

if your doing a turbo motor the 317 casting 6.0 heads will work well, they lower the compression and flow near what an ls6 head does. the 799 casting on the newer aluminum HO 5.3s are also a good flowing head, but don't lower the compression

What's factory compression on a 5.3 from a 2000 truck? This is all new to me but after riding in another guys car with an ls I don't think I will ever build another gen1 sbc again. Lol

I believe they are around 9:1, and they are a hypereutectic piston

Ok thanks. I have an LS6 factory cam out of a cadillac. Its out of the high horsepower cadillac model. Is it to much for my 5.3 and am I wasting my time? I got all the valvetrain parts, the cam and springs with locks and retainers.

it's not enough for your 5.3 lol, thats a pretty tame cam, but they work pretty well for what they are and they like boost

I amz seriously thinking a single turbo setup and want the motor to run good and survive. I was thinking a head and cam swap and maybe now forged pistons. I thought they were forged from the factory. Not sure if hyperutectic will survive 6-8lbs of boost

They will survive a lot more than that, 18-20+lbs is done on ls engines daily

Check out www.performancetrucks.net they have a forced induction section that has good info

Ok. Thank you so much for your help! I greatly appreciate this. I am going to send off my harness and computer to a place called 150tunes. They offer a harness rebuild and reflash and even better is they offer reflashes for life for free if I change anything on the engine!! This engine is going in my wifes 51 GMC pickup. Should run good.
